Hair Restoration Overview

Hair loss can be a very concerning experience for many adults, as approximately 35 million men and 21 million women experience hair loss in the U.S. alone. While both male hair loss and female hair loss can occur, there are different statistics by both gender and age: over 40 percent of men will have noticeable hair loss by the age of 35, while 65 percent of women will have noticeable hair loss by the time they are 60. PRP Hair Loss Treatment

If you have early thinning of the scalp with loss of fullness and growth of the hair, a new non-surgical treatment is now available at Sanchez Plastic Surgery. PRP(Platelet Rich Plasma) is processed from your own blood and then injected into the scalp to regenerate hair. The treatment is done with the patient awake and typically takes 1-1.5 hours. PRP contains growth factors that can cause hair growth by stimulating the stem cells and other cells in the microenvironment for the hair follicle. These growth factors that are found in our normal blood promote tissue healing, accelerate regeneration, and even can cause new cellular growth. The primary purpose of using PRP in hair restoration is to convert resting phase hair follicles into active growing hair follicles. Several treatments spaced 2-3 weeks apart are recommended for best results. Treatment is effective for both men and women. It is important to understand PRP treatment will not grow new hair if healthy follicles are not present.  

Micro Hair Grafting

Once the hair follicles are no longer active, new hair growth can only be achieved with grafting hair from another location. Male Pattern Baldness is a genetic condition, often transmitted through the mother’s side of the family. These patients have hereditary susceptibility of the receptors in the hair follicles of the temple, med and crown of the scalp to a hormone DHT(Dihydrotestosterone) that causes hair not to grow. Fortunately for men, the hair to the posterior lower scalp is typically sparred from male pattern loss and this area of hair can be used to donate hair to the areas of loss. Female Pattern Alopecia is also genetic condition similar to men in which there is a hypersensitivity at the hair follicle level to De-hydrotestosterone. For women the hair loss is generally more uniform thinning with preservation of the front hairline. For a female patient to be a candidate for hair grafting the patient must have an area of high enough hair density.

What To Expect

The Micrografting technique of hair transplantation involves the placement of very small hair follicle grafts called Micrografts (1-2 Hair follicular unit grafts) and Minigrafts (3-4 hair follicular unit grafts) into the scalp in large numbers (1000-2000 per session). The grafts are specifically placed one at a time into the scalp at the appropriate orientation, direction and location to reconstruct the natural hairline and hair pattern. The hair to be transplanted are acquired from a strip of hair taken from the posterior aspect of the scalp that is spared from the balding pattern. The donor area is closed with sutures, that generally leaves minimal scarring at the donor area hidden by the surrounding hair. Attention to detail in harvesting the donor hair in such a manner that does not injure the surrounding hair follicles prevents scarring and alopecia at the donor site. The sutures are removed in about 10 days.

After Treatment

It is important to understand the normal growth pattern of the newly transplanted hair. The transplanted hair initially grows in it’s new location for about 10 -12 days and then most of it falls out only to re-grow after 3-4 months. This is a normal and expected pattern of hair growth and caused by the hair going into a resting phase initially and after 3-4 months goes into the growth phase. Typically normal hair growth as is seen at the original donor site is achieved by 5-6 months.
